What is Popular Culture?

Popular culture is anything that is 'hip and now' in today's time. I see popular culture as a display of what people are interested in and how people perceive them. There are many items associated with popular culture and some of which are able to be touched while others are in a form of sound or even written.

Since times change daily, so does the meaning of popular culture. Something which is in demand today may not be as popular tomorrow, or even a month from now. In a business form, take for instance the Ty Beanie Babies; at one time, these bean-filled small animals were in such high demand, people were willing to shell out big money to own one. Today, from a business objective, Beanie Babies would not be something to invest in or even be associated with due to the lack of interest.

There are a number of attributes which could be associated with popular culture, including a variety of children's toys such as the Beanie Babies. This would be an artifact that would be considered something of past which is just that...the past. Beanie Babies were very popular in the early 1990's and phased out within 10 years of becoming a multi-million dollar company. You can still find these items, however they are not as popular nor is the demand as critical as it once was.

  1. Beanie Babies are a good item from the past; definitely an artifact of popular culture from that time period. Believe it or not, some specific babies are worth quite a bit; we found this out after a friend sold her entire collection at a yard sale. Some that she sold for a few dollars were valued between $400 and $1,000; someone made a very good investment that day.
